The Ballon d'Dor Award always creates a debate.

For what seems like a generation the main conversation was whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi should win it.

That era is now over, and while many commentators predict Messi's eighth award could be his last, the topic of conversation now leads on to who will challenge for future honours.

Is this year's best young player Jude Bellingham ready to take on the mantle, will Erling Haaland cap another goal-laden season with the 2024 award, could Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe rule the roost next year?

Or will Messi claim a ninth after helping Argentina win next summer's Copa America?

  3. Good morning

In case you are just waking up to the news, Lionel Messi last night claimed his eighth Ballon d'Or award and Spain's Aitana Bonmati won her first at a glittering ceremony in Paris.

Both players won titles for club and country.

Messi carried Argentina to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before winning Ligue 1 with Paris St-Germain.

And Bonmati won the Women's Champions League with Barcelona before landing the Golden Ball trophy as Spain's best player in their World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham capped his superb start to life with Real Madrid by winning the young player award, while Manchester City were named best team, Erling Haaland best striker and Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez best goalkeeper.
