Breaking news

Nottingham Forest have been docked four points for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, BBC Sport understands.

The immediate loss of points mean Forest drop below Luton Town into the Premier League's relegation zone.

They are the second top-flight team to be penalised for PSR breaches after Everton lost 10 points in November, which was reduced to six on appeal.

The deduction follows Forest's hearing on 7 and 8 March.

More to follow.

They have over 100 charges which is going to take a long time. I think Everton and Forest only had 1 each. City's trial is later this year.

Why oh why is Man City’s case taking so long to make a decision when the so called smaller clubs get their punishment in a very short time.

There is no point in having rules of they are not enforced and they should apply equally to all soccer teams including the big boys (e.g City).

Seems a sensible points penalty, given the circumstances of the offence.

Anyone who has followed this can see the circumstances around this, we were in breach by less than 8 weeks and allowed our biggest asset to be sold for 15m extra as a result.

Forest also had to invest heavily after being promoted with a squad valued at less than 50m.

Invest heavily in a panic including lots of players who the manager didn’t fancy and who haven’t worked out, talk about self inflicted

Financial rules mean that the so-called big clubs will continue to be able to buy their way into the Champions League and never have the fear of relegation to contend with

Hmmm, 10 points for Everton reduced to 6 on appeal, but 4 for Forest?

What's the reason for that difference? I'm sure there will be a reason, but I think it needs an explanation pretty sharpish.

Before the slew of comments appear questioning why this has been resolved before City - Forrest has seen their case completed because as they had fewer chargers and didn't tie the FA up in expensive litigation. They're also not backed up by a literal gulf state. The UK Government should have intervened to prevent the purchase of City in the fist place. Once they didn't, the FA stood no chance.

I agree, but do they really need to deal with all 115 charges at once? Why not start with the low hanging fruit?

I hope we don’t appeal, just move on. We know what we have to do now to stay up.

They need to start publishing the explanations on how point deductions are calculated, Everton got 6 points, Forrest only have 4. Corrupt Premier League?

Corrupt Premier League. So much for consistency. So much for leveling the playing field. It's one rule for the elite, one rule for the rest. They can stick it!
