Louis Moult tapped in from close range following Craig Sibbald's mis-hit shot and Watt capitalised on Jack Baird's error to run in the visitors' fourth.
Robbie Muirhead reacted well in the penalty area to net Morton's reply.
With four more second-tier games on Saturday, Raith Rovers can move back to within four points of United if they win at home to Partick Thistle.
Morton, who are sixth, trail Dunfermline by a point while Airdrieonians occupy the final promotion play-off place with a six-point advantage over the Pars.
